5. Warm-up—in notebook (7 minutes): a) Describe a time when you made a sacrifice in order to solve a problem; b) What personal items would you have a hard time giving up?
6. Read “The Gift of the Magi” on your own (pages 123-128)
7. Co-operative work with a partner next to them…no need to get up and move:
a) Do “Character Decision Chart” for Joe and Della. Pick one—not both. ON a sheet of paper (1 sheet per pair of students) write the following information: a) The character’s name; b) The key decision or action (With a quote from the book); c) What each of you would have done in that situation; d) how the story would change as a result of each of your decisions.
8. HOMEWORK:
a) Re-read O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” and answer questions 1-5 on page 129
